This workshop is taking place during the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown!
“Intro to Soil Health”-Kevin Elmy, P.Ag.
Kevin and his family farm in the Saltcoats, SK area operating a 1500-acre conventional seed farm using many organic principles. Their goal is to create a sustainable cropping system, using cover crops, short term forage stands, grazing, winter cereals, and annual legumes. They aim to improve the soil, build organic matter, and improve profitability of our land.
“What does Soil Health Look Like?”
Kevin Elmy conducts slake testing and other demonstrations.

“Building the Whole Farm from the Soil Up”-Garry Richards
Garry, his wife Lynn, and their three children Rebekah, Evan, and Caroline have a mixed grain and cattle farm near Bangor, southeast of Melville. They came back to Garry’s family’s farm in 2000. At that time Garry was a pharmacist, Lynn was a nurse, and it was their goal in the first few years to determine whether or not the farm would be viable without long-term subsidies from off-farm income. The farm was a straight grain operation in 2000, but beef cattle were added in 2002. In 2003 Garry and Lynn took a Holistic Management course. In 2009 they started growing cover crop cocktails in an effort to become more sustainable. One of their goals was to measure the changes they were making in the soil as a result of their regenerative management, so they now have lots of data on what is happening in their soil and are involved in a number of projects looking at soil health. They strive to integrate the cattle and grain enterprises on their farm to achieve healthy land, healthy people, and healthy profits.
“Regenerative Organic Practices on a large scale”-Travis Heide
Travis, his wife Amy and their three young daughters, his brother Garret, and about 15 full-time employees farm near Waldron, SK. They are in the process of transitioning the entire operation to certified organic, with over 40,000 acres becoming certified organic in 2020. Travis is enthusiastic about Organics, research and innovation, creating opportunity for the community, and playing a role in discovering and developing best practices for organic production.
“Regenerative Organic Certification”-Stuart McMillan
Stuart McMillan is the farm manager of Legend Organic Farms. The farm has a shared ownership structure with Nature’s Path Foods and is committed to using innovative and regenerative methods to meet sustainability and production goals. His past involvement in the organic sector has included inspection, certification, consulting, analysis and research.
