Brought to you by Farm Management Canada and the Canadian Herb, Spice & Specialty Ag & Natural Health Products Coalition (CHSNC), and SaskOrganics Association Inc.

Farm life can be unpredictable, even on the best days – weather, pests, market conditions, relationships, financial issues, and more recently, COVID-19 can affect not only day-to-day farm management but the future of the operation altogether. In recent years, producers have seen the devastating effects that certain risks can have on a farm. But, with risk, also comes opportunity for those who are positioned to take calculated risks. This is why it’s important to plan for risk.

This workshop will increase your ability to assess and address risks using a comprehensive approach to managing risk on the farm and to get your Good Agricultural & Collection Practices (G.A.C.P). In addition to the GACP certificate, you will also gain free access to Agrishield Risk Assessment & Management Tool for a period of one year!

The workshop will allow you to:

  • Build a risk management program that you can show to your financial institutions, buyers and insurers, so they get the reassurance they need.
  • Gain knowledge, tools and resources to make better business decisions and manage your risk
  • Receive your GACP certification
  • Share best practices and lessons learned with others that are in similar situations
  • Begin to create a comprehensive risk management plan tailored to your farm

IMPORTANT:

  • In order to receive your GACP certificate, registrants MUST be in attendance on all three days. By registering, you are registering for all three dates.
  • These sessions will NOT be recorded. Attendance of the live event is required.
  • Please note that this is an interactive workshop. Given its nature, we have limited the number of participants.

Thanks to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Agri-Risk Initiatives Program and the Government of Saskatchewan, this workshop is FREE to Organic Growers in Saskatchewan.

Roots to success

Managing financial risk in farming

Farming is an occupation where nature practices her curve balls. A farmer has to respond quickly to adverse situations and to opportunities … in terms to production and to finances. Roots to Success can turn “flying by the seat of your pants” into an organized financial process. It is an opportunity to explore all the aspects of your business from you own perspective. It helps you identify financial and business issues and think about solutions that suit your needs. For our business it has helped us identify both our weaknesses and our strong points. And that has helped us spend our precious time where we need to spend it. Our banker looks at us a little differently now and has made funding available that helps us move forward .. because we have put the effort into understanding our business better.

G.A.C.P

Climbing the value added staircase:

When your background becomes your foundation GACP makes you think about what you are doing, how you are doing it, and how you are recording it. It is a process that builds efficiency and accuracy. Having a third party assess your process builds customer trust. And your customer is not only the person or business who buys your product, whether you are “selling” raw material or value-added.

When we moved into agritourism and value added products we used GACP as a bragging point. Now we use it as a strong selling point. It has opened doors with partnerships for manufacturing our raw material. It has enhanced access to government funding programs. It has built relationships with lending institutions and both product and farm liability insurance. As much as the products we grow and make, GACP has played an important role in generating sustained profits. Perhaps most importantly, it has influenced our mindset, and that in turn has guided us in moving forward.
