Q&A: Canadian Organic Standard Review

July 4 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

About the event:

The 60-day public comment period for the 2025 draft of the Canadian Organic Standards has begun! Understanding the standards and how proposed changes may affect your operation can be complex, that’s why SaskOrganics, Manitoba Organics, and Organic Alberta are teaming up to host an online Q&A session.

We’ll go through some of the major changes that will apply to prairie producers, the rationale behind the proposed change, and you will be able to ask questions of the Standard Review’s contributors. You’ll also learn how to submit comments to the CGSB.

This session will be hosted online at 9:00-10:30am CST/MDT (Alberta & Saskatchewan), 10:00–11:30am CDT (Manitoba).

Background:

On May 30, 2025, the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) launched the 60-day public comment period  during which all operators and stakeholders are invited to comment on the proposed modifications to the Canadian Organic Standards.
To help stakeholders see the draft changes and justification behind the change, the OFC has created these helpful documents  with tracked changes as well as rationale. View these versions below.

Submit Comments
To submit your comments, please use the following forms:

All comments shall be sent to CGSB – astrid.lozano@tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca

Your comment can be:

  • general (ge) – you provide information or your opinion about a proposed modification that might lead to a revision of a proposed modification
  • technical (te) – you provide technical information that might lead to a revision of a proposed modification
  • editorial (ed) – you suggest rewording a clause, fixing a typo, or another editorial change that does not change the intent or meaning of the standard.

Deadline for submitting your comments – July 29, 2025

Review of the Comments

Every comment is considered! The CGSB directives guide the analysis of all the comments submitted under the public review.

1. Comments that suggest the same change for the same reason can be amalgamated.
2. If comment has no new technical information and has been addressed by the WG in preparing the draft , the comment does not need any further consideration (no change to proposal in the PR version of standard)
3. If comment has new technical information, the working group recommends a modification to the change already proposed (modification to proposal in standard)

4. If comment has new technical information, the working group recommends delete change proposed (basically return to 2020 edition)

Changes to the standards may affect your operation so be sure to review. You have 60 days to have your say in this important process. Final 2025 Standards will be published in December.
